A silverback (adult male) Mountain Gorilla beating its chest and running towards our group in Rwanda. It was one of those heart pounding moments. I'm not sure how I managed to stay so calm, when it stopped barely two metres to my right. He clearly didn't know about keeping 5m distance, which is the guidance when doing a trek.
This was his reason for becoming agitated. He was making sure we didn't move too close to his infant. He settled down and the troop became very relaxed with us watching. They groomed each other and even went to sleep. My lasting memory was this last photo I took. As relaxed as they were, the adult female was keeping one eye on us, so too was the infant. It was a truly unforgettable experience.
